2024 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz emerged last year as one of the best closers for fantasy purposes, boasting nine wins and 37 saves with solid ratios and a 30% strikeout rate. While his save total was fourth highest in the majors, Diaz only accounted for 69.8% of the Reds' 53 saves. Cincinnati was more competitive last year, but led the league in one-run games and recorded a save in a league-leading 64.6% of their 82 wins. As such, expecting Diaz to approach the 40-save mark again in 2024 might be a mistake, especially given the 27-year-old's perennially high walk rate. Diaz did adjust his pitch usage, opting to throw far more sliders (51.5% usage) than he did in 2022 (35.2%). It was one of the best sliders in baseball per Statcast Run Value (16), while his four-seamer lost some velocity (-1.2 mph) and wasn't as effective. Diaz also faded down the stretch, possibly due to a career-high 71 appearances. Look for him to be one of the top 10 closers off the board, but don't lock in a repeat of last season's stats. Walks tightrope for 11th save
Diaz earned the save Friday against the Cubs despite allowing a run on two hits in a walk in the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Diaz allowed the first two baserunners to reach safely before surrendering a one-out double to Seiya Suzuki. While one run scored on the play, Jacob Hurtubise would throw out Nick Madrigal at the plate as the tying run before Diaz got Cody Bellinger to fly out, sealing a 5-4 victory. While it didn't come easy for Diaz on Friday, he's now converted four straight save opportunities while allowing just one earned run in his last 5.2 innings. Diaz's ERA still sits at an uninspiring 5.91 with a 1.55 WHP and 22:15 K:BB across 21.1 innings this year. He's converted 11 of 13 save chances overall.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz bypassed Triple-A entirely, making the jump from Double-A to the majors last season after making the Reds roster out of spring training. Edwin's younger brother quickly emerged as a key bullpen piece for Cincinnati, going from middle relief to high leverage by mid May. Both his fastball (65% usage) and slider (35%) were extremely effective, as his xBA was in the 99th percentile while his strikeout and whiff rates were also elite. Not all was great, as the rookie had a high walk rate (12.9%), and an extreme fly ball percentage (54.5%) that yielded a .178 BABIP that was second lowest among qualified relievers. Ultimately, Diaz was a stabilizing presence within an otherwise inconsistent bullpen. He should be the favorite to close games for the Reds to start 2023, but keep in mind David Bell has deployed a committee the last two years and several injured relievers (Antone, Sims, Santillan) will be returning next season.
