2024 Fantasy Outlook
There might not have been a prospect to improve their standing more than Matos did last season. He was awful and often injured in the low minors in 2022, but the young outfielder earned a promotion to the big leagues in mid-June after getting off to a blistering .350/.415/.561 start between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento. Matos wasn't ever able to get going with the Giants, eventually leading to a couple stints back in the minors during the second half. The struggles weren't surprising given that he was just 21 and had very little upper-minors experience before getting called up. Matos' elite contact rates from the minors (12.2 percent strikeout rate) did carry over to the majors (13 percent) and the hope is that some over-the-fence power will come along as he matures. Ultimately, though, there are still a wide range of outcomes here. Read Past Outlooks
Heading back to Triple-A
The Giants optioned Matos to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
After being recalled from Sacramento on May 12, Matos operated as a near-everyday player during his three-plus-week stay with the Giants, but he moved to the bench Monday after Michael Conforto was reinstated from the IL. Though Matos rejoined the lineup Tuesday against Diamondbacks lefty Blake Walston, Matos will lose his spot, with the Giants bringing back another right-handed-hitting outfielder (Austin Slater) back onto the active roster for Wednesday's series finale in Arizona. Matos likely would have had a case for sticking around with the Giants if he had been performing well, but he had fallen into a 2-for-22 drought at the dish over his last six starts.

Earns POTW honors
Matos was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old was called up by the Giants on May 12, and he posted a 1.115 OPS with 16 RBI in six games during the ensuing week. San Francisco's Opening Day center fielder Jung Hoo Lee will miss the rest of the season due to shoulder surgery, and Matos wasted little time in claiming an everyday role. The hot start obviously isn't sustainable, but Matos could be a boon the rest of the way for any fantasy managers able to pick him up off waivers.

2020
There are contextual factors (quad injury in May, .226 BABIP) that didn't help Matos, but there's no denying his 2022 season was among the most disappointing by a top prospect. Always young yet advanced for his levels, there was nothing in Matos' profile to suggest he might struggle at High-A, but he slashed .211/.275/.344 with a 74 wRC+ and a 31.9 Soft%. Amid all the struggles, his 16.0 K% and ability to hit 11 homers and steal 11 bases in 91 games show there are still skills to work with. The hitter-friendly Arizona Fall League seemed like a great chance for Matos to end the year on a high note, but he had a .640 OPS with 20 strikeouts and two home runs in 22 games. He is only entering his age-21 season, so it's still early, but it's currently tough to see much more realistic upside than a Manuel Margot type of outfielder who plays a bunch and compiles unspectacular counting stats.
