Rest-of-Season Projections
Cut loose by Cleveland
The Guardians released Segura after acquiring him from the Marlins on Tuesday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old and Kahlil Watson were sent to Cleveland in exchange for Josh Bell, but Segura will instead head straight to the open market. Segura has struggled at the plate with a .219/.277/.279 slash line in 326 plate appearances this season, but it's still somewhat of a surprise to see the Guardians let him go with well over $10 million left on his contract.

Every year, someone emerges from the middle or late rounds to produce first-round fantasy value. Who will that player be this season?
Erik Halterman looks at the best and worst players by round for earned auction value rankings, including Freddie Freeman, who from a pure "spots gained" perspective, was the best pick of Round 1.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to play third base
Segura is likely to play third base for the Marlins, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins evidently plan to keep Jazz Chisholm at second base and have Joey Wendle and Miguel Rojas as options at shortstop, leaving the hot corner to Segura. The 32-year-old has made just 21 career starts at third base and none since 2020. Mish also reports that Segura's two-year, $17 million contract -- which will be announced once he passes a physical -- contains a team option for a third year.

Segura sustained a fractured finger in late May and was limited to 98 games in 2022, and he was solid when healthy with 10 home runs and 13 stolen bases for a 105 wRC+. The injury resulted in him playing the fewest games of his career as he had previously never played fewer than 125 contests, not counting his rookie campaign and the shortened 2020 season. He continues to provide an above-average bat at second base, but his counting stats have dwindled over the past few years. He had a 15.0 percent strikeout rate and .305 BABIP, which is in line with his career numbers. Segura should be able to maintain that batting profile for at least another year, though his fantasy potential remains limited beyond a strong batting average. He should have an everyday role after signing with the Marlins, though he's set to work at third base, where his bat doesn't play as well relative to the position.
