Gets Sunday off
Ahmed is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ahmed will get just his second day off through the Giants' first 16 games of the season, with Tyler Fitzgerald stepping in to replace him at shortstop. The Giants value Ahmed primarily for his steady glove in the middle infield, as he hasn't offered much to get excited about from a fantasy perspective despite his standing as an everyday player. Over his 48 plate appearances on the season, Ahmed is hitting .261 with zero home runs or stolen bases, six RBI and three runs.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might fit in St. Louis
Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat speculates that Ahmed would be a logical signing for the Cardinals with Tommy Edman battling a wrist injury.
ANALYSIS
Edman is poised to start in center field when healthy but will also be St. Louis' backup shortstop, where starter Masyn Winn is also dealing with an upper-body issue. The Cardinals don't have much depth at the position otherwise, making Ahmed a potential fit. The veteran shortstop had a .560 OPS in 72 games for Arizona last season before being released in September, but he would provide defensive stability.

Lingering shoulder discomfort delayed Ahmed's 2022 debut for a couple of weeks. While on the COVID-19 list in late May, Ahmed experienced more shoulder soreness and was ultimately shut down followed by season-ending surgery. Ahmed was more productive than the prior year in the 17 games he played, but it's a small sample. Geraldo Perdomo took over at shortstop for Ahmed, but he finished with a .547 OPS so the two should battle for the job in the spring. Even if he prevails, Ahmed's production doesn't move the mixed league needle. He's best suited for NL-only formats.

Takes lead for shortstop job
Giants manager Bob Melvin hinted Saturday that Ahmed is now ahead of Marco Luciano in the competition for the starting job at shortstop, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "There's some time left," Melvin said of the competition. "It's not like Marco's got a lot of consistent at-bats. Obviously, the hamstring thing set him back quite a bit. We want to make sure we get him a little deeper in games and play him a little bit more but also understand he's coming back from an injury that you don't want to happen again."
