March 13, 2022
Northcraft signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Sunday that includes an invite to major-league spring training.
ANALYSIS
Northcraft got his first taste of major-league action in 2021 and allowed two runs while striking out five in eight innings across five relief appearances. He was less effective in the minors, as he posted an 8.10 ERA and 2.06 WHIP in 13.1 innings across 13 appearances at Triple-A El Paso before being released in July. The right-hander will compete for a spot in the major-league bullpen ahead of the 2022 campaign but is unlikely to have a significant role for the Padres, even if he makes the Opening Day roster.

Most 29-year-olds with no big-league experience aren't worth a second thought in fantasy baseball. On the other hand, pitchers who record a 1.87 ERA at the Triple-A level are at least moderately interesting. That's what Northcraft did in 33.2 innings for Tacoma in the Mariners' system after a two-year hiatus from affiliated ball. His 10.2% walk rate was slightly high, but he more than made up for it with his 27.3% strikeout rate and 64.9% groundball rate. It's unwise to get too excited about those numbers given Northcraft's age, but they do at least make him more interesting than most 29-year-olds who don't have a track record in the majors. Signing with the Marlins, a team that's very short on proven relievers, adds additional intrigue, though Northcraft will have to make the 40-man roster and the 25-man roster before it's worth discussing him as a high-leverage candidate.
It wasn't as if the Braves rushed Northcraft to Triple-A Gwinnett, as he had made close to 40 starts at the Double-A level by the time he was promoted halfway through the 2014 season, but the right-hander proved unprepared regardless. He went 0-7 with a 6.54 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 13 appearances (12 starts) with Gwinnett, spanning 64.2 innings, with his opponents' average rising close to 90 points between levels (from .228 with Double-A Mississippi to .317). Northcraft struggled to adjust to the competition at the Double-A level upon his promotion in 2013 but eventually figured it out, and he'll look to repeat that narrative in the International League in 2015, but his strikeout rate has dipped the past two years with his advancement through the system, and he doesn't project to be anything more than a back-end rotation option.
In his first season at the Double-A level, Northcraft posted a 3.42 ERA and a 2.37 K/BB across 26 starts. He didn't blow by hitters quite like he did in 2012, when the right-hander fanned 160 batters, tops in the Carolina League, but Northcraft still put up a very respectable 7.9 K/9, while also inducing a high number of groundballs (1.96 GO/AO). He can be erratic, and likely needs to show more in the minors, but it's conceivable Northcraft could get his first cup of coffee with the big club in 2014.
