Last year’s minor-league leader with 191 strikeouts in 141.1 innings, Hansen looks like a future No. 1 or No. 2 starter on paper. His success in his first full season may oversell his realistic long-term upside. At 6-foot-7 he gets excellent extension on his mid-90s fastball, which is his bread and butter, and allows his secondary pitches to play up against overmatched minor-league hitters. His curveball has a chance to be a 55 or 60-grade offering and his changeup could be average or a tick above, while his slider lags behind. His fastball won’t be quite as dominant against big-league hitters, so he will need to command it well, which he did not really need to do against Low-A and High-A hitters. Given the inherent risk with pitching prospects and the fact that Hansen’s perceived value may be a bit too high after this monstrous statistical campaign, he makes for a good sell-high option this offseason. He should start the year at Double-A and spend most, if not all of the season in the upper levels of the minors.
The 6-foot-7 right-hander torpedoed his draft stock with a horrific junior season at Oklahoma. He struggled out of the gate and briefly lost his spot in the rotation, finishing with a 5.06 ERA and 7.0 BB/9 over 37.1 innings. He signed for the full slot value at pick No. 49 and the White Sox appear to have gotten one of the steals of the draft. Hansen posted an 81:20 K:BB in 54.2 innings across stops in the Arizona, Pioneer and Sally leagues, and seems to have regained the form that once had him in the mix to go No. 1 overall in the 2016 draft. He features a plus fastball that sits in the mid-90s with late life, a plus slider and potentially plus curveball. Hansen does not need his changeup right now, but it figures to be his fourth best pitch -- a potentially average offering. He does not project to have pinpoint control, but the stuff is so overpowering that he could be a No. 2 starter who racks up strikeouts.
