2024 Fantasy Outlook
Reyes fell into a good situation in 2023 with the Red Sox, whose middle infield was in flux all season. Trevor Story's elbow injury and Enrique Hernandez's backslide at the plate created opportunities for the journeyman infielder and others. The situation prior to spring training got less hopeful for Reyes after the Red Sox acquired Vaughn Grissom from Atlanta in the Chris Sale trade. Early on, Grissom is perceived as the leader to become Boston's everyday second baseman. The 30-year-old Reyes has never had more than 185 plate appearances in the majors and is probably going to serve as a backup utility infielder - manager Alex Cora said last season that he did not view Reyes as an everyday player. Starts at third base
Reyes started at third base and went 0-for-4 in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Reyes filled in for the injured Rafael Devers (knee) and committed a costly error that allowed one of three unearned runs to score. Reyes also couldn't get a ball out of his glove quick enough to start a 5-4-3 double, which allowed another run to score. Per Ian Browne of MLB.com, the Red Sox are hoping to avoid having to put Devers on the injured list, which suggests a fill-in will be needed for more than just Thursday's contest. Reyes and Bobby Dalbec are the primary candidates to play third base should Devers need an stint on the IL.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Not in long-term plans
According to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, Reyes is expected to receive more playing time at shortstop going forward, though manager Alex Cora doesn't view the infielder as an everyday player.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old has a .288/.327/.346 slash line in 56 plate appearances this season, but he's apparently shown enough to receive a longer look at shortstop with the Red Sox reducing the role of Enrique Hernandez. Reyes won't be a lineup staple but for now appears atop the depth chart at the position, as Boston is without a clear answer while Yu Chang, Adalberto Mondesi and Trevor Story are on the injured list. Story likely won't be back until at least August while recovering from an elbow issue, while Chang and Mondesi recently suffered setbacks with their wrist and hamstring injuries, respectively.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2019
Reyes spent about half the season on the Pirates' big-league roster, mostly in a bench role. He saw time at six different positions but did very little in his 157 trips to the plate, hitting just .203/.274/.322 with two homers. According to Statcast, that line was a result of poor performance, not bad luck, as he finished with an xBA of .192 and an xSLG of .284. He did at least look far more competent in 51 games for Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .286/.342/.543, but the Pirates have seemingly lost interest in a player who has yet to find big-league success through his age-26 season, as he was designated for assignment in January. Reyes' defensive versatility could help him find his way back to a bench spot at some point this season, but it's a stretch to predict a player with his lack of a track record to earn much playing time let alone to become a valuable fantasy asset.
