2024 Fantasy Outlook
Loperfido looks the part of a big leaguer, standing 6-foot-4, 195 pounds and showcasing above-average power and speed. The 24-year-old can play all over the diamond, seeing double-digit starts at every position except catcher, shortstop and third base. His arm is indeed the weakest part of his defensive game, but his athleticism makes him playable in the outfield and he's got enough arm for second base. He was old for every level he played at last season, so while his .296/.392/.548 slash line with 19 home runs and 20 steals in 84 games at Double-A was impressive, his run at Triple-A (.235/.333/.403 slash, 32.6 K%) was much less so. Loperfido has made a strong impression early in big-league camp, and given that he'll turn 25 in May, he could make his big-league debut this summer if there's an opening and he's performing better at Triple-A. Confirmed for call-up
The Astros confirmed that they will select Loperfido's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Loperfido earned his first promotion to the big leagues by slashing .287/.393/.713 with 13 home runs and five stolen bases in his first 25 games with Sugar Land this season. He also had a 30.3 percent strikeout rate, and contact has often been an issue for the 24-year-old throughout his time in the minors. However, with Jose Abreu performing so poorly at first base, the Astros appear willing to give Loperfido a look at the position even if strikeouts are abundant. Loperfido can also play the outfield, and he could be an option for at-bats there, as well, if the Astros elect to cut the playing time of Mauricio Dubon and/or Jake Meyers.
