What to Watch: Week 3 in College Football (Part II)

12:00 PM ET ESPN: #12 Arkansas 2-0 @ Georgia 1-1 (-2.5)
- In this match-up, the Bulldogs simply have the Razorbacks' number.  They've won 9 of the 12 games in the series and are 5-0 with Mark Richt as their coach.  It'll be pretty tough this time around though, as they'll most likely be without junior WR AJ Green, who is still suspended for selling his own jersey to an agent.  Their red-shirt frosh QB Aaron Murray has completed 66|PERCENT| of his passes for 352 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT, through two games.  Sophomore RB Washaun Ealey will be looking to bounce back from his costly fumble against South Carolina, which occurred on the 3 yard line, just as the Bulldogs were about to score.  The Razorbacks come in with junior QB Ryan Mallet, who is on the radar of all NFL scouts.  So far he has a 73.1|PERCENT| completion percentage with 701 yards, 6 TDs, and 2 INTs.  The team won't have special teams returner Dennis Johnson, as he's out with a "bowel injury."  Johnson is the all-time leader in Arkansas history in kickoff return yards (1,936). Georgia has lost 6 of their last 8 against Top 25 teams and will need a win if they don't want to start 0-2 in the SEC.

12:00 PM ET ESPNU: Maryland 2-0 @ #21 West Virginia 2-0 (-10) - The Mountaineers got a heck of a scare last week against Marshall.  They were down 6-21 in the third quarter, before sophomore QB Geno Smith led them on two very long TD drives to tie the game at the end of regulation, 21-21.  They won the game when kicker Tyler Bitancurt made his 20 yard field goal and Marshall's kicker Tyler Warner missed his 39 yard try.  This week their defense will need to buckle down as they face a Terps squad that uses two QBs to run their offense.  Junior Jamaar Robinson has completed 42.1|PERCENT| of his passes for 81 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs, while red-shirt freshman Danny O'Brien has completed 50|PERCENT| of his passes for 79 yards with 3 TDs and no INTs.  Neither QB will have to worry about Mountaineers senior starting CB Brandon Hogan, who was suspended indefinitely after a DUI.  The 'Terps defense has only allowed 17 points through two games, but those were against Navy and Morgan State.  Last time I checked, those schools don't have a talented RB like senior Mountaineer Noel Devine, who is averaging 4.8 yards a carry on 46 carries.

3:30 PM ET ABC/ESPN2: #8 Nebraska 2-0 (-3.5) @ Washington 1-1 - The Nebraska defense is still a great unit, despite the loss of Ndamukong Suh to the NFL.  Through two weeks they have 8 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and 6 interceptions, 2 of which were returned for TDs.  They have the challenge of containing Huskies senior QB Jake Locker, who in case you haven't heard, is really, really talented.  Locker has completed 60|PERCENT| of his passes for 555 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, while rushing for 41 yards and 1 TD.  He can really put himself on the Heisman trophy map, with a great performance in this game.  When the Huskers have the ball, look for red-shirt freshman QB Taylor Martinez (aka T-Magic) to spice things up with his ability to run.  Through two games, Martinez has 21 carries for 284 yards and 5 TDs.  Last season at home, the Huskies knocked off two top 25 ranked teams in USC and Cal, so don't expect them to back down from the challenge.  This series is tied 3-3-1 with the last game coming in 1998.

3:30 PM ET ABC/ESPN2: Arizona State 2-0 @ #11 Wisconsin 2-0 (-14) - This might be junior QB Steven Threet's first season as a Sun Devil, but it's not his first time to face Wisconsin.  Back in '08, Threet was the starting QB at Michigan, when the Wolverines beat the 9th ranked Badgers 27-25.  He comes into this game with a 67.1|PERCENT| completion rate, 630 yards passing, 5 TDs, and 3 INTs.  Coach Dennis Erickson's team is 3rd to last among all FBS teams with 112 yards per game in penalties.  For the Badgers, they'll need to clean up their own mistakes on defense.  Last week they allowed 307 total yards to a San Jose State team that finished 2-10 a season ago.  On offense, junior RB John Clay has backed up his Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year award by rushing for 260 yards on 40 carries for 4 TDs.  The team will likely be without junior WR Nick Toon (turf toe) and senior WR David Gilreath (concussion), both of whom are battling injuries.  Wisconsin has won 25 straight against unranked teams at home.

3:30 PM ET CBS: #10 Florida 2-0 (-14) @ Tennessee 1-1 - Gators junior WR Chris Rainey's decision to text message his girlfriend "time to die" has him off the team for the time being, as he is facing stalking charges.  It came out Thursday that under Urban Meyer, the Gators have had 16.2|PERCENT| of their football players arrested or face a charge.  Vols fans have created t-shirts to make light of the Rainey situation, which is disappointing in its own way.  Back to action on the field... Last week against Oregon, the Vols played good football for 2 quarters (13-13 at half), before being dusted by the Ducks 13-48.  They allowed 245 rushing yards, something Gators junior RB Jeff Demps will try to take advantage of.  The Gators offense as a whole has been out of sync, as they've average 320 total yards per game through two games, which is last among all FBS teams in the state of Florida.  Junior QB John Brantley will have to work with sophomore WR Omarius Hines, who is filling in for Rainey, to try to get the team moving down the field.  For the Vols, look for them to continue to make junior RB Tauren Poole the focal point of their offense, as he had 162 yards rushing on 23 carries with 1 TD against Oregon.

7:00 PM ET ESPN: Clemson 2-0 @ #16 Auburn 2-0 (-7.5) - The ACC is about to find out what the SEC already knows... Cam Newton can do it all.  The junior QB for Auburn is second in the SEC in rushing yards per game (120.5) and second in passing TDs (5).  True frosh RB Michael Dyer was a big time recruit coming out of high school and serves as a speedy option in Auburn's zone-read option attack offense.  Their defense really buckled down last week against Mississippi State, holding them to 246 total yards.  They'll try to contain Clemson sophomore QB Kyle Parker, who was drafted in the first round of this year's MLB draft by the Colorado Rockies.  In the Clemson backfield will be sophomore Andre Ellington and junior Jamie Harper, who wish to be known as "the New Storm."  Their nickname is a take on the C.J. Spiller & James Davis combo, which was known as "Thunder and Lightening."  Clemson has lost 13 straight in this series, including their last meeting in the '07 Chick-fil-A Bowl.

7:00 PM ET ESPNU: Mississippi State 1-1 @ #15 LSU 2-0 (-8) - Tigers coach Les Miles has a problem at QB and he knows it.  Last week at home against Vanderbilt, junior Jordan Jefferson went 8/20 for 96 yards with 0 TDs and 1 INT.  The team failed to score in the first or third quarters of the game, against a Vandy defense that finished at the bottom in the SEC last season in almost all statistical categories.  Backup junior Jarrett Lee is a pick-six machine.  When Lee started in '08, he threw 16 picks, 7 of which were returned for TDs.  Scary as that may be, Lee may play if Jefferson can not generate first downs.  Fortunately, they have a defense that has allowed only 44.5 rushing yards a game, good for 4th best among FBS teams.  Mississippi State hung tough with Auburn last week, losing 14-17.  Last year in this game, LSU needed a goal-line stand to prevent the Bulldogs from pulling the upset, 30-26, in Starkville.  They'll be utilizing a two QB system with red-shirt frosh Tyler Russell and junior Chris Relf in hopes of finishing what they started last season.

8:00 PM ET ABC/ESPN2: #6 Texas 2-0 (-3) @ Texas Tech 2-0 - Mack Brown and company head back to Lubbock, where the Red Raiders are a tough team to beat.  The last time the Longhorns were here in '08, they lost on a last second catch by Michael Crabtree.  Since Brown took over they team, Texas is 3-3 here.  They bring with them sophomore QB Garrett Gilbert, who was impressive in last season's national championship game against Alabama, but has been quiet since.  After two games against Rice and Wyoming, the Longhorns pass offense ranks 86th in the nation with Gilbert throwing for only 394 yards and 1 TD.  Their run game has yet to find any consistency, as this week junior RB Fozzy Whittaker becomes the Longhorns third different RB to start in as many weeks.  The Red Raiders offense is a well oiled machine in comparison, this despite bringing in a new coach in Tommy Tuberville and new OC in Troy's Neal Brown.  Senior QB Taylor Potts has thrown for 652 yards with 7 TDs and 0 INTs over his first two games.  The team is averaging 43.5 points per game, good for 17th in the nation.  For the Longhorns to win, they'll have to avoid a slow start as they've scored only 3 points in the first quarter of each of their games so far.

8:00 PM ET ABC/ESPN2: Notre Dame 1-1 @ Michigan State 2-0 (-3.5) - Last year this game ended on a Kirk Cousins interception on the Notre Dame 4 yard line, which helped the Fighting Irish preserve a 33-30 win over the Spartans.  This time around Cousins has a ground game that's ranked 11th in the nation at nearly 261 yards a game to help him carry the load.  Sophomore Edwin Baker and true freshman Le'Veon Bell have combined for nearly 500 rushing yards and 6 TDs.  What's scary is this unit could get even better with sophomore Larry Caper (hand), who lead the team in rushing last season, expected back this week.  Notre Dame is coming off of a loss to Michigan, where QB Denard Robinson ran wild on them for 258 yards.  When the Fighting Irish have the ball, look for sophomore QB Dayne Crist to hand-off to senior RB Armando Allen and throw to his two main pass threats, junior WR Michael Floyd and junior TE Kyle Rudolph.  Crist was knocked out of last weeks game for a big chunk of the first half with blurred vision, but was able to come back in the second half, where he connected with Rudolph for a 95 yard TD.  Don't be surprised if this one is decided on the final possession again.

10:30 PM ET ESPN: #9 Iowa 2-0 (-2) @ #24 Arizona 2-0 - The first thing I noticed about this game was the start time, 9:30 pm central for the traveling Hawkeyes.  They'll come into this game with their offense averaging 457 yards per game.  Through two games, senior QB Ricky Stanzi has completed 70.7|PERCENT| of his passes for 433 yards, 3 TDs, and no INTs.  Their run game is fueled by sophomore RB Adam Robinson who is averaging 7 yards per carry with 4 TDs.  The calling card of Kirk Ferentz's team is their offensive line, which is now without Brian Bulaga (NFL).  Their defense is great with three seniors on their line including Adrian Clayborn, Christian Ballard, and Karl Klug.  Their secondary is also outstanding with junior CB Shaun Prater, junior SS Tyler Sash, and senior FS Brett Greenwood.  They'll have the task of stopping junior QB Nick Foles and the Wildcats 10th ranked passing offense (344 yards per game).  Foles, who didn't start last year in this game, has completed an excellent 83.1|PERCENT| of his passes this season.  Senior RB Nic Grisby has been used sparingly with only 19 carries, but he's made the most of them as he's averaged 8.4 yards per carry.  Last season in this game, Grisby had a 58 yard run, so the Hawkeyes will be expecting him.  The Wildcats defense has given up just 8 points total in their first two games against Toledo and Citadel.  Something tells me that probably won't last in this game.  Note that this is the only game this week with two top 25 ranked teams facing each other.  The Hawkeyes won this game last year at home 27-17.

10:30 PM ET FSN: #23 Houston 2-0 (-3) @ UCLA 0-2 - Will Cougs senior QB Case Keenum play this week?  That's the question everyone is asking going into this game.  The Heisman hopeful threw for over 5,600 yards last season with 44 TDs.  His health is in question because of a concussion he suffered against UTEP last Friday night, in U of H's 54-24 win.  Should Keenum not play, junior QB Cotton Turner, who hasn't started a game since high school, will fill in.  Last week against UTEP, Turner was 9/10 for 69 yards and 1 TD.  The Cougs might not need Keenum to play this week, with the way they're running the ball with junior RB Bryce Beall.  In only 24 carries, Beall has 243 yards rushing and 5 TDs.  The Bruins run defense is 5th worst in among all FBS teams at 262 yards per game allowed, so they'll have their hands full.  The UCLA schedule has done them no favors, as they started out on the road at Kansas State (loss), at home to take on Stanford (loss), and then take on Texas in Austin next week (probably a loss).  Their pass offense (100.5 yards per game) has been down right awful (6th worst in FBS) with sophomore QB Kevin Prince in their first two games.  The only thing keeping them alive right now is their run game, which is led by sophomore RB Johnathan Franklin and even that has only managed 1 TD.  The Bruins are 23-1 all time against non-BCS teams at home, a record that will be put to the test this week.

I'll leave you with this story from College Football Talk, check out this woman's obituary and then ask yourself how big of a college football fan you are.
