Stay For A Night Cap! - Sundae Beisbol Edition

Indians 12 - Reds 4

- Edinson Volquez's first inning woes continued as he gave up 4 runs to start the game.  He only lasted 2.2 inning in all, before being pulled.  He finished with 7 runs (6 earned) on 4 walks and 7 hits.  The erratic control doesn't inspire much confidence in him.
- Carlos Carrasco was much better by comparison with 4 earned runs allowed over 6 innings.  He gave up two homers, but luckily they were both solo shots.
- Asdrubal Cabrera had himself a heck of a day going 5-5 with 5 RBI, 2 runs, a homer, and a steal.  He's slugging .522, not bad for a short-stop.
- W: Carlos Carrasco (3-2), L: Edinson Volquez (3-2)
- HR: Joey Votto (6), Jay Bruce (11), Asdrubal Cabrera (8, 9)
- SB: Michael Brantley (6), Asdrubal Cabrera (6), Travis Buck (1); CS: Drew Stubbs (2)

Yankees 9 - Mets 3

- Ivan Nova had a quality start with 6.2 innings and 3 earned runs.  He gave up 11 hits, but the Mets were never able to capitalize on them after the 2nd inning.  Only 2 strikeouts here, which you'd like to see pick up as he has middling control.
- Mike Pelfrey took the loss after giving up 5 earned runs over 6 innings.  He cruised through 6 innings, but stumbled in the 7th with a 2-run single to Jeter.  After that the bullpen took over and allowed 2 more of his runners to score.
- Curtis Granderson hit his 16th homer, a solo shot in this one.  He's slugging an absurd .614.  Almost all of his homers are pulled to right.
- Derek Jeter went 2-5 with two singles that were both grounders, not surprisingly.
- W: Luis Ayala (1-0), L: Mike Pelfrey (3-4)
- HR: Curtis Granderson (16)
- SB: Jason Pridie (4)

Astros 3 - Blue Jays 2

- Wandy Rodriguez held the Blue Jays to just 2 runs, both off of homers, over 6 innings to earn his 3rd win.  After an up and down start to the season he has allowed just 7 earned runs over his last 36 innings for a 1.75 ERA.  In an Astro pitching staff full of problems, Wandy has been one of the few bright spots.
- Kyle Drabek, a former Houstonian, had a quality start with 3 earned runs over 6 innings.  A Hunter Pence 2-run homer in the 5th was the difference.  Drabek is still finding his way as his 3 walks and 3 strikeouts to a punchless Astros lineup shows.
- Mark Melancon got 5 outs for his 3rd save of the season.  Things got hairy in the bottom of the 9th as he loaded the bases with 2 outs, but he got Aaron Hill to ground out to end it.  Wilton Lopez got 4 outs, setting him up.
- J.R. Towles went 0-4 and doesn't have a hit since May 4th.  That's 0-30 if you were wondering.  It's actually 0-32 because he went hitless in his last two at-bats in that game.  Jason Castro, you are missed.
- W: Wandy Rodriguez (3-3), L: Kyle Drabek (3-3), SV: Mark Melancon (3)
- HR: Hunter Pence (6), Juan Rivera (4), J.P. Arencibia (8)
- SB: Michael Bourn (17), Chris Johnson (2)

Rays 4 - Marlins 0

- Big Game James Shields turned in another masterful performance with a complete game shutout.  He allowed 3 hits with 1 walk and 13 strikeouts.  If you're into game score, this was a 93, the highest of the season.  It really is hard to put into words just how dominant Shields was.  At one point he retired 17 straight batters.
- Hanley Ramirez went 0-4 and is now batting .219/.294/.325 on the season.  Not exactly the return you'd like to see from a first round pick.
- Matt Joyce went 1-4 with a double, run, RBI, walk, and strikeout.  He's batting .355/.422/.617 and needs to be owned in all leagues.
- W: James Shields (5-2), L: Jay Buente (0-1)
- SB: Sean Rodriguez (3), Elliot Johnson (2), Johnny Damon (1)

Rangers 2 - Phillies 0

- Matt Harrison held the Phillies scoreless for 8.1 innings for his 4th win.  He walked 3 and struck out 3 in what was easily his best performance of the season.
- Roy Oswalt pitched 7 innings of 1 run ball, but ended up with the loss.  He's 3-2 with a 2.77 ERA and zero run support in his last two starts.  And Oswalt thought the run support would be better once he left Houston, silly him.
- The Phillies have scored the 3rd fewest runs this month (56).  The Rangers have scored the 4th fewest runs this month (65).  Injuries have certainly taken their toll.
- Chase Utley will be activated on Monday from the DL.  Coming back from a knee injury, it's tough to say what kind of impact Utley will have.  He's an upgrade from Wilson Valdez, that's for sure.
- W: Matt Harrison (4-4), L: Roy Oswalt (3-2), SV: Neftali Feliz (9)
- SB: Elvis Andrus (15)

Orioles 2 - Nationals 1

- Chris Tillman pitched 5 innings and allowed just 1 run in a no-decision.  Things could have been much worse as he loaded the bases int he 4th with only 1 out.  Yet he worked out of that jam, allowing just 1 run.  He has now allowed just 2 earned runs over his last 16 innings with an 11/8 K/BB ratio.
- Jordan Zimmerman allowed 2 earned runs over 6.1 innings, but took the loss.  Not exactly the follow up to his 11 strikeout game that his owners would have liked, but 5 strikeouts to just 1 walk, isn't awful.
- MIchael Morse went 2-4 as he plays 1B, while Adam LaRoche works through his shoulder woes.
- W: Jim Johnson (3-1), L: Jordan Zimmerman (2-5), SV: Kevin Gregg (8)
- HR: Vladimir Guerrero (5)
- CS: MIchael Morse (2), Brian Bixler (1)

Tigers 2 - Pirates 0

- Rick Porcello needed only 84 pitches to toss 8 shutout innings.  He allowed 1 hit with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.  After his two ho-hum starts, Porcello has allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in his last 6 outings.  Not surprisingly, he has won 4 of his last 5 games.  What's changed from last season?  His change-up.
- Paul Maholm took the loss with 2 earned runs in 5.1 innings.  Not the worst performance, but not very economical either as he needed 96 pitches.  He's now 1-7, but sporting a 3.65 ERA.
- Andrew McCutchen went 0-1 with 2 walks, a hit by pitch, and stolen base.  I'm quite bullish on McCutchen despite his .257 batting average.
- W: Rick Porcello (4-2), L: Paul Maholm (1-7), SV: Jose Valverde (11)
- HR: Jhonny Peralta (7)
- SB: Andrew McCutchen (7)

White Sox 8 - Dodgers 3

- Edwin Jackson pitched 5.2 innings with 1 earned run for a win.  He struck out 7 with 2 walks.  His home ERA is now 2.84, while his road ERA is 5.76.
- Matt Thornton nailed down his 2nd save of the season with 2 scoreless innings to end things.  He allowed 1 hit with 1 strikeout.
- Hiroki Kuroda took the loss after allowing 4 earned runs over 5.2 innings.  He gave up 2 homers, which has become something of an issue for him.  His HR/9 is 1.22 this season, almost twice what it was last season.
- Jerry Sands went 4-4 with a run to boost his batting line to .241/.330/.391.  Jay Gibbons was the Dodgers DH in this game.  Not surprisingly the Dodgers have scored the 2nd fewest runs this month (55).
- Alexei Ramirez went 4-5 with a single, two doubles, and a homer.  Not bad when you get 5 RBI in one game with 3 extra base hits.
- W: Edwin Jackson (4-5), L: Hiroki Kuroda (5-4), SV: Matt Thornton (2)
- HR: Alexei Ramirez (6), A.J. Pierzynski (2)
- SB: Jamey Carroll (5), Tony Gwynn Jr. (5), Jerry Sands (3)

Cardinals 9 - Royals 8

- Jaime Garcia pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 earned runs.  He left with a 4-run lead, but the bullpen poo-poo'd that.  This is what passes as a bad game for Garcia as he has been pretty lights out this season with a 1.93 ERA.  His control this season has been outstanding with a 1.79 BB/9.
- Fernando Salas earned his 7th save with a run allowed on 2 hits.  He ended things with the tying run stranded on 2nd.  It's not official that Salas is the team's closer, but he's the team's closer.  Eduardo Sanchez gave up a run in the 7th.
- Allen Craig went 2-2 with a homer and walk.  This from 2nd base, a position he doesn't normally play.  Of course with Tony LaRussa, this is par for the course.
- W: Jason Motte (2-1), L: Louis Coleman (0-1), SV: Fernando Salas (7)
- HR: Allen Craig (3), Alex Gordon (4), Jeff Francoeur (9), Wilson Betemit (2)
- SB: Jeff Francoeur (5); CS: Jon Jay (2)

Angels 4 - Braves 1

- Tyler Chatwood tossed 7 innings of 1-run ball in a win.  He struck out 6 and walked 2, which is pretty surprising considering his lack of command to this point.
- Derek Lowe had a quality start with 6 innings pitched and 3 earned runs allowed.  He took the loss after Chatwood out dueled him.  His command was middling with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts.
- Torii Hunter went 2-4 with a 2-run homer and a double.  The 35 year old OF is hitting .231/.314/.352 this season.
- W: Tyler Chatwood (3-2), L: Derek Lowe (3-4), SV: Jordan Walden (8)
- HR: Torii Hunter (5)

Mariners 6 - Padres 1

- Felix Hernandez was in vintage form as he allowed 1 earned run over 8 innings with 13 strikeouts.  The 13 Ks ties a career high as the Padres batters has no chance.  The 6 runs he got in support are rare.
- Tim Stauffer gave up 10 hits en route to 3 earned runs in 6 innings.  He's still looking for his first win of the season.  He only struck out 3 in what was an offensive explosion for the Mariners.
- Miguel Olivo went 3-5 as every Mariners position player got a hit in this game.  They totaled 15 hits in all.
- W: Felix Hernandez (5-4), L: Tim Stauffer (0-3)
- SB: Adam Kennedy (5), Miguel Olivo (1); CS: Jason Bartlett (1)

Giants 5 - A's 4

- Gio Gonzalez pitched 6.2 innings with 2 runs (1 earned) allowed in a no-decision.  He struck out 8 and left with a 1 run lead, but the bullpen blew the lead and eventually the game.  Gio's ERA is now 2.20 in what has been a fantastic start to the season.
- Jonathan Sanchez allowed 1 run over his 6 innings, but also left with a no-decision.  His bullpen (Jeremy Affeldt) blew it for him, in what was a tight game.  He struck out 6 and walked 2.  In his last three starts he's cut down on the walks, that have always been a problem for him.
- Nate Schierholtz went 1-2 with a 2-run homer to tie things up in the 8th inning.  He's batting .263/.314/.488 this season
- Sergio Romo picked up the win with 3 strikeouts in 2 scoreless innings.  He's now 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA.
- W: Sergio Romo (2-0), L: Brian Fuentes (1-6)
- HR: Josh Willingham (7), Nate Schierholtz (4)
- SB: Coco Crisp (14), Daric Barton (1), Mark Ellis (6), Darren Ford (5)

Diamondbacks 3 - Twins 2

- Dan Hudson allowed 2 earned runs over 8 innings in a win.  He struck out 6 with no walks in what was his 6th straight quality start.  There's plenty to like in the 24 year old righty.  His command has been great this season as it was in this game. As a team the D-Backs have allowed the 5th fewest runs this month.
- Francisco Liriano pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts.  Not a no-hitter, but not terrible either.  In his three starts since his no-no he has allowed 7 runs over 16 innings with a 14/8 K/BB ratio.
- Ben Revere went 2-4 and was rewarded by being sent back down to the minors.  He should be back soon.
- Juan Miranda went 1-3 with a homer.  He got hit in the hand in the 8th inning.  It's not broken, which is the good news.  He'll have more tests on Monday to re-evaluate him.  With Russell Branyan down, the D-Backs need him.
- W: Daniel Hudson (5-5), L: Alex Burnett (0-3), SV: J.J. Putz (12)
- HR: Delmon Young (1), Juan Miranda (3)
- SB: Ryan Roberts (6); CS: Alexi Casilla (2), Willie Bloomquist (3)

Red Sox 5 - Cubs 1

- Tim Wakefield pitched 6.2 innings of 1-run ball with 3 strikeouts in a win.  The knuckle was knuckling as he walked none and gave up only 4 hits.  It was the 44 year old's first win of the season and perhaps not his last as he'll be in the rotation until John Lackey is back.
- Adrian Gonzalez went 4-4 with 2 runs to push his batting line to .342/.391/.574.  The Red Sox are now just a 1/2 game behind the Yankees and Rays for 1st place in the AL East.  Remember when they were struggling?
- Carl Crawford went 0-3 with a strikeout.  He's batting .209/.243/.277 on the season.  Alright, well I guess he's still struggling.
- W: Tim Wakefield (1-1), L: James Russell (1-5)
- HR: Jarrod Saltalamacchia (3)
- CS: Jacoby Ellsbury (5)

Brewers 3 - Rockies 1

- Randy Wolf held the Rockies to 1 run over 7 innings in a win.  He walked 3 with 5 strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 3.70.  The Brewers are a NL best 16-6 at home this season.  Wolf's command has bounced around this season and now stands at a 2.15 K/BB.
- Ubaldo Jimenez pitched a complete game with 8 innings of 3-run (2 unearned) ball.  He allowed just 2 hits, but also walked 5 with 4 strikeouts.  The 2 hits are great, but the walks are a real concern.  His walk rate is up to 5.64 BB/9, which is not like him at all.  He only needed 105 pitches in this game, so there's that.
- John Axford earned his 12th save with a scoreless 9th.  He also has a sweet 'stache.
- Ryan Braun went 1-4 with 2 RBI.  It was a 2-run triple that he scored on because of an error.  The OF is hitting .299/.390/.565 this season.
- W: Randy Wolf (4-4), L: Ubaldo Jimenez (0-4), SV: John Axford (12)
- SB: Rickie Weeks (6), Carlos Gomez (12)
