DraftKings NHL: Monday Breakdown

DraftKings NHL: Monday Breakdown

This article is part of our DraftKings NHL series.

It's a slight slate for the NHL on Monday. There are only two games on the docket, so I'll keep this opening short and simple in honor of this light day of action...

SLATE PREVIEW

Both game start at 7 p.m. EST. We have the Lightning hosting the Islanders and the Blue Jackets hosting the Red Wings. None of these four teams are on a back-to-back, but the Wings and Islanders have games Tuesday, which could impact goaltending decisions.

GOALIE

Andrei Vasilevskiy, TAM vs. NYI ($7,900): This is the obvious choice, but it's also the only choice I really want to make. Vasilevskiy has a 2.31 GAA and .921 save percentage, which are in line with his career numbers that have him headed into the Hall of Fame. The Islanders, meanwhile, have only scored 2.45 goals per game, making this choice even easier.

VALUE PLAYS

Steven Stamkos, TAM vs. NYI ($7,200): The Islanders' goaltending has been strong, though they have allowed 33.5 shots on net per contest. As such, I am going with a guy who has been hot and doesn't necessarily need an easy matchup. Stamkos has tallied 15 points and 36 shots on net for the Lightning. Both of those lead Tampa Bay.

Robby Fabbri, DET at CLM ($3,700): Speaking of allowing shots, the Blue Jackets have allowed a league-high 34.8 shots on net per game. Elvis Merzlikins has been up to the task, but the Jackets have used Joonas Korpisalo almost as much, and he has an .897 save percentage. Fabbri has seven points in 16 games, but with a 7.3 shooting percentage. He's put 41 shots on goal, and if he keeps shooting like this more pucks will likely go in the net.

LINE STACK TO CONSIDER

Blue Jackets vs. Red Wings: Boone Jenner (C - $4,700), Oliver Bjorkstrand (W - $6,700), Gustav Nyquist ($2,700)

This is a game that should feature a lot of pucks on net. I already mentioned Columbus has given up 34.8 shots on  goal per game, but Detroit has also allowed 34.3 shots on net per contest as well. Additionally, the Red Wings have a 3.13 GAA. Columbus is dealing with injuries, but its second line is enticing here.

Jenner has six goals in 12 games, and he has two assists as well. Additionally, he has 20 shots on goal in his last five contests. Bjorkstrand, meanwhile, has been red hot, as he has a five-game point streak that has helped him to 15 points on the season. Nyquist is off to a slow start, perhaps owing to the fact he didn't play last season. However, in his last campaign he had 42 points in 70 contests. Plus, he's playing his old team Monday.

DEFENSE

Zach Werenski, CLM vs. DET ($6,500): Points have been a little hard to come by for Werenski after a hot start, but shots have not. He has 42 shots on goal in 12 games. Werenski has also averaged 26:14 and 3:22 with the extra man, both career highs. All of that going against a team with a 3.13 GAA that has allowed 34.3 shots on net per game bodes well.

Filip Hronek, DET at CLM ($4,100): Hronek is getting overshadowed by Moritz Seider, but he has eight points in 14 games. He's averaged 2:15 per game with the extra man, and last year he tallied 11 power-play points. The Blue Jackets have a middling penalty kill, and they've allowed the most shots on net per game.
